Police Custodial Healthcare Services.

Mountain Healthcare Ltd provides specialist Custodial Healthcare Services, attending to individuals who are detained within Police custody, supporting their health and well-being.

Our specialist Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics work hard towards improving the outcomes of detainees, whilst supporting the Criminal Justice System.


We currently manage the custodial healthcare provision for 3 police forces, including; Thames Valley Police, Surrey Police, and West Midlands Police.

What is Police Custodial healthcare?

Police Custodial Healthcare is the provision of healthcare services within a custody setting. Those who are detained in custody may require medical assessments, urgent care, or forensic samples to be taken. All of this can be carried out by our specially trained healthcare professionals (nurses and paramedics) and Doctors, who are employed to work within custody suites.

What services do we offer to those who are in our care?

Custodial Healthcare is a complex field of work, which sees a diverse range of people presenting ​with a varied range of physical and mental health issues. Each individual will be unique in their healthcare requirements, which are HCPs/Doctors are available to assist with.

Our healthcare provision for individuals can include;

  • Assessing their fitness to be detained/interviewed in police custody;
  • Treating existing injuries/illnesses, which present during their time in custody;
  • Treating illnesses which may develop during their time in custody;
  • ​Treating injuries sustained at their arrest; and
  • Referring them to hospital or to aftercare services, following their detention period.​

Supporting the Criminal Justice System

Our healthcare professionals provide an essential forensic service, which supports the Criminal Justice System, including;

  • Ensuring individuals are fit to detain/interview;
  • Collecting forensic samples, which may be used for evidence; and
  • Ensuring that detainees are safe whilst in custody, and on release. 

Our services support the police by providing an effective forensic healthcare service within custody suites. This involves conducting clinical assessments, identifying and implementing appropriate interventions, collecting forensic samples, providing advice and guidance, and maintaining detailed and accurate records to ensure the health, safety and welfare of detained persons.
